I think this is one of the clearest ways I can describe what changed.
At first, I recognized unhealthy behavior afterward.
I’d explode.
Then feel terrible.
Then replay everything.
Then think:
Why did I do that?
Later, something changed.
I started catching myself while it was happening.
I’d be explaining and suddenly realize:
I’m doing it again.
I’d start bringing up something from the past and stop:
That has nothing to do with this conversation.
Then something else began happening.
I could sometimes catch the thought before it became the behavior.
And eventually there were ordinary moments when the old meaning didn’t seem to arrive with the same force at all.
That’s why I don’t think healing for me was one breakthrough.
It was repetitive.
See a little. Change a little. Become capable of seeing more. Change more.
Again and again.
I don’t think my brain became perfect.
I think I became better at recognizing what was happening inside me earlier.
And earlier recognition gave me more choices.
