So what do I actually do with all of this?
That’s the Bridge.
The Bridge isn’t a place where I convince myself everything is fine.
It isn’t forced positivity.
It isn’t ignoring intuition.
It isn’t forgiving somebody who is actively harming me and walking straight back into the same situation.
It’s the space where I stop automatically moving from something happened to therefore I must react.
For me, it looks something like this:
QUESTION
What actually happened?
What am I feeling?
What do I know?
What am I assuming?
Does this remind me of something old?
Does this require action?
PAUSE
I don’t have to solve this in the next ten seconds.
I don’t have to send the message immediately.
I don’t have to prove my point right now.
I can allow more information to arrive.
CHOOSE
Does this need a conversation?
A boundary?
Documentation?
A report?
A question?
Distance?
Or does it simply need to be left alone?
The Bridge doesn’t always lead to the same answer.
It creates enough space for me to choose instead of automatically repeat.
And then comes the part people sometimes leave out:
Practice.
One healthy response didn’t rewrite decades of learning for me.
I had to do it again.
And again.
And again.
