If you’ve spent years trying to figure out how to explain your pain so someone else will finally understand it, I want to tell you something I wish I had understood much earlier.
You may not have the words yet.
And that’s okay.
There were things happening inside my own mind that I couldn’t explain while I was living through them.
I knew I was hurting.
I knew certain things affected me deeply.
I knew some relationships didn’t feel right.
I knew I was struggling.
But knowing you’re hurting and understanding why your mind works the way it does are two completely different things.
It took me years to understand what my experiences had taught me.
It took healing to recognize survival mode.
It took healing to understand my triggers.
It took healing to recognize unhealthy patterns in other people.
And perhaps hardest of all:
It took healing to recognize unhealthy patterns in myself.
So if someone is demanding an explanation from you and you’re thinking,
I don’t know how to make you understand…
Maybe you can’t right now.
And maybe you don’t have to.
You are allowed to heal before you have all the answers.
You are allowed to discover that some things you once believed were someone else’s responsibility actually belong to you.
You are allowed to discover that other things genuinely were unhealthy.
You are allowed to change your interpretation as your mind becomes healthier.
You are allowed to forgive without returning to the same relationship.
You are allowed to reconcile if something genuinely changes.
You are allowed to leave a door unlocked without standing beside it waiting.
And you don’t have to hand someone every painful detail of your life simply because they demand an explanation.
There was a time when I thought healing would eventually give me the words to tell everyone exactly what they had done to me.
Instead, healing gave me something completely different.
I stopped needing them to understand.
The past became something that happened in my life instead of the place where I continued to live.
I stopped needing someone else to validate every memory.
I stopped needing an apology to prove something hurt.
I stopped needing someone else to carry responsibility for everything that happened afterward.
And eventually I could look backward without asking:
Look what you did to me.
I could say:
This is what happened in my early life.
This is where I am now.
And everything between those two places became part of my healing journey.
That doesn’t erase anyone’s responsibility.
It doesn’t make unhealthy behavior healthy.
And it doesn’t mean reconciliation is required.
It means I no longer need another human being to carry my story before I can put it down.
And if you’re not there yet, that doesn’t mean you’ve failed.
Keep healing.
Keep learning.
Keep becoming curious about yourself.
Seek appropriate help when you need it.
And when you reach the things that another person simply cannot understand, give those things to God.
You don’t have to convince everyone.
You don’t have to make someone experience your pain before your pain becomes real.
You don’t have to explain yourself until you’re emotionally exhausted.
Some people may understand eventually.
Some may never understand.
God already does.
And maybe someday you’ll discover what I did:
Healing wasn’t finally finding the perfect words that made everybody understand me.
Healing was reaching a place where I no longer needed them to.
