What Happened Was Only Part of the Story
For much of my life, I understood my experiences through what happened to me, how those experiences made me feel, and how I responded to the world around me.
But as I began healing, I discovered something I hadn’t fully understood before.
What happened to me was only part of the story. What my mind learned from those experiences mattered, too.
I began recognizing patterns in my thoughts, behaviors, reactions, and relationships that I hadn’t always understood.
Some were learned through experiences. Others developed through repetition, observation, and the environments I had lived in.
And some were so familiar that I never thought to question whether they were healthy.
As I began looking at myself from two different perspectives—the Inside-Out and the Outside-In—I started recognizing things about myself that I couldn’t see before.
That discovery became the foundation of what I now call The Abyss & Bridge Framework.
An educational approach informed by my lived experience, exploring the space between what we understand about ourselves, what others experience through our behavior, and what we may not yet recognize.
Because healing isn’t simply about understanding what happened to us.
Sometimes, it’s also about discovering what those experiences taught our minds—and learning that we can choose to respond differently.
Understanding the Inside-Out, Outside-In, Abyss & Bridge
1. The Inside-Out: What We Experience Within
The Inside-Out represents our internal world—our thoughts, emotions, fears, beliefs, intentions, memories, and the meanings we’ve learned to attach to our experiences.
It’s the part of ourselves that other people cannot fully see.
For much of my life, I understood my reactions through what I was feeling and why I believed I was responding that way.
But knowing how I felt didn’t always mean I understood everything influencing those feelings or whether my responses were healthy.
The Inside-Out helps us begin asking: What is happening within me, and what might my mind have learned along the way?
2. The Outside-In: What Others Experience
The Outside-In represents what other people can observe and experience through our words, actions, behaviors, and responses.
Someone may not know what we’re feeling internally, but they can experience how we communicate, react, and treat them.
This became an important part of my healing.
I began recognizing that my intentions and the impact of my behavior weren’t always the same.
Understanding my pain helped explain some of my reactions, but it didn’t automatically make those reactions healthy.
The Outside-In invites us to consider: What might someone else be experiencing through my behavior?
3. The Abyss: What We Cannot Yet See
The Abyss represents the gap between what we understand about ourselves from the Inside-Out and what others may observe from the Outside-In.
It’s the space where important pieces of understanding can be missing.
Sometimes we recognize our feelings but not the beliefs influencing them.
Sometimes we understand our intentions but cannot yet recognize the impact of our responses.
And sometimes we see unhealthy behavior in others while struggling to recognize similar patterns within ourselves.
The Abyss isn’t the person, the trauma, or the behavior itself. It’s the gap in understanding that we may not yet recognize.
4. The Bridge: Learning to Understand and Respond Differently
The Bridge represents the process of beginning to close that gap.
For me, this involved learning to question my automatic interpretations, pause before responding, consider healthier choices, and practice responding differently.
It wasn’t about denying my feelings or excusing someone else’s unhealthy behavior.
It was about understanding that I could acknowledge what happened to me while also taking responsibility for how I responded.
I began practicing a simple process:
Question → Pause → Choose → Practice → Reinforce
Over time, recognizing unhealthy patterns became easier, and I found myself making healthier choices more often.
The Bridge isn’t about becoming perfect. It’s about building greater awareness, understanding, accountability, and healthier ways of living.
Watch The Abyss & Bridge | A 12-Part Teaching Series
Healing isn’t always about discovering something new. Sometimes, it’s about recognizing something we’ve experienced our entire lives but never fully understood.
In this 12-part video series, I share what I began discovering through my own healing journey—from recognizing the difference between what happened to me and what my mind learned, to understanding my thoughts, reactions, relationships, and behaviors from the Inside-Out and Outside-In.
Each lesson builds on the one before it, exploring the importance of self-awareness, accountability, healthier choices, and continued growth.
Start with Part 1 and follow along as we explore the journey from understanding our experiences to recognizing what we can begin changing.
New lessons will be added as the series unfolds.
